Eight-year-old Carrie Parker and her little sister, Emma, live in a town called Toast with their mother and their alcoholic, cruel, and sexually abusive stepfather. Carrie and Emma do their best to avoid the terrifying family conflicts, but when a kindly neighbor notices Carrie`s bruises--the visible ones--he intervenes, teaching her how to handle a rifle.
